kitchen rebuild necessitates replacement of ugly and poorly installed stop cock. How do I control supply side of cock and are there more modern and attractively designed alternatives to the traditional stop cock?

isolate mains water stopcock in street.
check first before removing existing stopcock of pipe sizes each side of stopcock.
is it 15mm copper both sides or 22m
or your main in may be 20mm or 25mm blue mdpe pipe

fit a full bore lever isolation valve, which are within regs and don't leak or seizen up. compression fitting both ends.
