How do I stop the player from eating the cassette tape?

How can I stop my tape deck from eating the cassette tape when I try to record? When I press record, then open the deck, the tape is stuck on the reels? What can I do?

Run a cleaning tape through it,it's just a sticky buildup on the pinch rollers and head(s).
