Fix Ariston Eurocombi Boiler?

Hi,

I have an Ariston Eurocombi boiler.
Problem: Get Hot water only when Central Heating is on.
Central Heating everything works fine.
If central heating is OFF then do not get Hot Water.
What is likely to be wrong?
I guess a particular part has gone faulty. What would that be?

Thanks

Regards

Hi. My Ariston e-combi not working. A few days ago all the indicator lights on the boiler stopped working even though the boiler was still running. The boiler cut out just now because I had to top up the gas (pre-paid) but even though I'm turning on the boiler, it's not responding. Any help available?

Ariston EuroCombi boiler A/27 Heating turns on by itself

I've had an Ariston EuroCombi A/27 combination boiler for over 10 years and for the past 4 months it has developed a fault - the Gas Central Heating would come on by itself for approx 20 to 30 minutes & then turn itself off for a few hours before turning itself back on again etc... a constant cycle. This would happen throughout the day & night regardless if we turned the boiler just to hot water only.

Looking throughout the internet, one of the initial solutions was to change the Microswitch for 3-way/main flow group (its a £12.28 part 5733340) however this did not resolve the problem. Everywhere I looked there were different opinions on how to resolve so....

After speaking to a engineer who has worked on these boilers for over 20 years, he advised the above would not have resolved the problem as the central heating was coming on by itself regardless if anyone used hot water or not (if the heating was turning itself on directly related to someone turning hot water on then it may have been the solution to that problem). The solution though to my problem was not to hire any ghostbusters or priests to get rid of evil spirits who may be inhabiting the boiler but instead was either ;

A) The temperture probe for the central heating system needed replacing

e.g. if this was not working, the boiler would enter "Frost mode" , regardless if CH was turned on or not, so it would automatically come on every few hours to prevent the cold from freezing up pipes etc.... (original Part number 569236 but since replaced by part number 998458 which costs £3.87 + Vat http://www.deansgas.co.uk/ariston-temperature-probe-998458-microcombi-23--27-10666-p.asp)

Or it would be

B) Faulty program clock

As the temperture probe was only £3.87, we tried A) & YES IT WORKED STRAIGHT AWAY ! & has continued to work for the past week since replacement

The reason I'm making this post is to help others who have the same problem with their bolier. This is a very reliable boiler so don' scrap it if you can fix this easily.

The www address for the part is shown under A) above & it really is very simple to replace (took 10 minutes in all)

Please my boiler sometimes is on and give red flame flame instead of proper light or continue making noise as if it is going to force itself to light up.

Please advice.

WHEN MY CENTRAL HEATING IS ON I HAVE HOT WATER BUT ONCE THE HEATING IS TURNED OFF WE HAVE NO HOT WATER AT ALL.... ANY SUGGESTIONS??

JAMIE, February 2010
the boiler does not hold pressure. any ideas ?

You have a defective, or porous diaphragm within the diverter valve. This retaials at about £15-20.00, and takes about 20 minutes to replace once the system has been drained back. A check you can carry out is to view the three way micro switch directly above the diverter valve; if the plunger does not rise and compress the micro switches when you turn on the hot water tap, you can be assured that this is the cause.

The manual says A97 is a 'Problem with electronic monitoring'
Could be faulty sensor or circuit board problem.
Text me your email & I will send the the manual 07770926488

I have an error message on my boiler the triangle symbol has come on and I have an A and a 97 in the two boxes. There is no gas at all, no heating or hot water. Please help.

Had problems with hot water as above. Only hot when heating on.
Changed diverter dyaphram and put it back no problems.
Everything went well but now I have no hot water at all??
Do I need to bleed anything to get it working?

Almost certainly diverter valve, you could get diaphragm kit but it would be better to get the whole thing.

Hi all,

Any of you knowledgeable people live near or be prepared to travel to Maida Vale, London to fix our Ariston EuroCombi A23/A27 boiler?? The hot water has all but given up and my two young children are missing their baths... I'd be grateful if someone could call me on 07980878210 with a reasonable quote. Thanks!

2 things cause this problem either divertor valve or the pump pressure switch is blocked both are common on this boiler

ariston engineer for 15 years, June 2009
the divert valve has gone

With regard to spare parts, the diverter valve and diaphram are both made by GIANNONI. On the brass body there is a large letter eg "E" facing you, this tells you which it is (i think this is to do with the pipe positions). To just replace the diaphram, the top of the brass diverter valve can be released by removing eight screws, plus i think you need to undo the top nut. If access is too tight and you cant get to the screws you may damage them and have to take out the whole unit (i have done this too). Make sure the new diaphram is the right way up by only taking out the old one when you want to put in its replacement. Before you commence you need to cut off the water flow and drain out the excess (pressurised) water. When refilling repressurise between 1-2 bar (up to 3 bar ok but puts a strain on your pipes). The hot water will not flow until pressure is at least 0.5 bar.

RICHARD MOORE, May 2009
i have had this happen many times and have sorted it. i am not a plumber but an engineer and understand the principles. Basically, the rubber diaphram inside the diverter valve (the brass body) deteriorates with the hot water every 2-3 years and needs replacing. When it gets to the stage where hot water only comes out with the Central Heating on it is at the last stage before total stutdown (ie no hot water at all). The diaphram can be changed if you know what you are doing at a cost of £10-15 but if you replace the whole diverter valve it will cost £50-100 depending on your source of spares. With the latter you will need a new set of washers too so make sure they are included. A plumber will charge £100-200 to do the former and £300-500 to do the latter. So if you can do it yourself then you will save some serious dosh. If you dont want to do this then get a breakdown insurance (but they wont pay out for the first month) which will save a lot of expense. I started changing mine in 2002 when a plumber charged me £120 just to change the diaphram in half an hour. If you do the job remember to have the right tools and PVA tape for the nut threads.

RICHARD MOORE, May 2009
i have taken a rad off to decorate and when i put it back my boiler will not fire up.i have try'd the reset button but to no avail.can someone help

david, April 2009
hi im a gas breakdown engineer,,
answers to your questions.
hot water temp flucktuation is down to the direct hot water heat exchanger be partually bloked with sludge, system needs to flushed..
hot water not working at all..
there is a rubber diaphram that is pushed when you open the tap, this in turn moves the divertor valve which inturn activates the microswith to fire the burner. not sure if you can buy the diaphram assembly on its own, you may have to have a complete divertor valve

qpauly, February 2009
water to water heat exchanger blocked or 3 way valve sticking(divertor valve)try shuting the flow and return and see what happens to hot water

jim, January 2009
I have the Ariston Eurocombi too and have the following issues

If the heating is on, hot water is hit and miss. Sometimes I get hot water for a few minutes then it runs cold.
After I turn the heating off, I can't get hot water for almost 2 hours!!!
Sometimes just getting hot water can be troublesome....hot to cold to hot....

Diverter?

Neil, January 2009
I had the same problem, when I got it inspected was told the diverter valve had jammed up. was also told that it was impossible to find the spare parts but not done my own research. As I can not afford a new boiler i will have to find the spare part. Also unsure of what model no my boiler is. Where is the model no listed if you do not have a manual?

Hi,
I have a Euro Combi Ariston- central heating is fine, as it water in the kitchen however not in the bathroom- so no baths. Does this have something to do with the domestic hot water knob?

Monique Thompson, January 2008
I have recently turned the heating on for the winter and now im having problems with the hot water!! it has not been at its normal temperature, and when i had a shower tonight the boiler started to make banging noises! and now it keeps cutting out and the bar gauge is all over the place, any suggestions please????

martin james, November 2007
Hi, I also have an Ariston Eurocombi boiler. Yesterday it stopped working and I had a heating engineer come out to fix it. There was simply no water in it and he opened a value, the gauge then went from zero to two "bar".

However, today the gauge has continued to rise, now at three and a half. This concerns me, what should I be doing? I've checked that the valve the guy used to let more water in is shut (perpendicular to direction of pipe).

Should I be letting water out? Should I not be worrying? Should I call the guy back and pay another call out fee?

Help much appreciated!

Alef, July 2007
the answer to that is the diverter valve has had it

tim oriordan, March 2007
Also the diagphram may have split within in the valve

Roger, February 2007
Almost certainly your changeover valve has seized in the heating mode, some of these valves will work temporarily if they are given a solid knock, but it will need replacing soon
