The mains electric, earth leakage trips out whenever I try to start the machine, only when a programme is selected, it does not happen when the machine is just turned on
We have had a problem with the door and have to "bang it closed"
Has this damaged the electrical connecions in the door, and will replacing this part sort the problem out?

Or is it something else that may be the problem?

this is problem sounds like it is your motor, try taking the back off and pulling the motor plug out then retry. TURN POWER OFF FIRST !!!!
