I am having the same problem. My E: drive (cd drive) is gone. It isn't in the device manager at all and it isn't showing up in my computer. Also it won't open and close.
It is a sony vio and I think it may have happened when I reinstalled itunes. Does that make any sense?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is there power to the drive? Does it open and close? If it does, it might be the cable that is loose either where it plugs into the cd-rom at the rear (the grey flat cable), or at the motherboard end. Try pushing the cable in - with the power off - and re-starting. If its bust, they are pennies to buy these days.
