Peugeot 406 over-revving?

Hi,

I have a 1998 Peugeot 406. The problem is that it starts normally but when the engine is heated up roughly after 20-30 mins of driving, RPM goes to 25-30 when at idle. My mechanic is saying that it could it be a damaged idle control valve but he isn't sure. Could this be the cause of this over-revving?

Thanks

i have a 206 and i am having the same problem when i start it up i will over rev some times it will be fine but when it dose happen and i am coming to a stop the revs go back up again to about 30 40k what is not good people are looking at me like i want a race .... when i do have the problem i turn the car off and some times it will not start up again i have to wait like 10 min trying it any one know why

I think that not only the idle speed control vlave causes the idle speed to be faulty , also the ECU software parameters must be checked and modulated.

I can start my engine and its fine, or start my engine and it over revs, or start my engine and its revving up and down liike I am about to start a race, or start my engine and its revving and as soon as I touch the clutch it revs through the roof. By turning the engine off a few times clears it most of the time when its playing and, and does tend to happen more in the winter in colder weather but Peugeot did the diagnostics comtuer on it which they told me there was no problem at a charge of £35, no problem, its embarrassing sometimes especially when its really bad like the engine is going to explode. Also when playing up its like cruise control (hich I don't have on mine) and the over revs means I don't have to touch the accelerator, which in my mind it a bit dangerous, but Peugeot don't care!

it`s your idle control valve you need to just remove it and clean it with carb cleaner.
you need to synconize after you replace it by switching the ignition on for about 10 seconds do this 3 times then start her up and drive for about 20 minutes.
also give the throttle body a clean up.

I had the same problem with my Peugeot 406 but as well as over-revving when idle it was also ticking over badly and would sometimes stall.
Eventually I got it serviced at a Peugeot dealers (quite expensive) but it has not had the problem since and that was 2 months ago
