how do i fix my ibm laptop?

my daughter has a ibm thinkpad laptop she turns it on it starts up your screensaver appears not thats as far as it goes we cant do anything at all can u help

You should have slot in drives, cd or floppy. It might be worthwhile swapping the drives over then see if it boots up from recovery disc/floppy - if you have one. If you have additional RAM card under cover just unplug the card for 10 seconds then restart.
