My DVD player will play some DVDs but not others. When it won't play it displays the message "can't read disc/check disc." I have tried cleaning both the discs and the player but it hasn't helped.

i have understood ur Q why u cant play other movies,
well we have different types of dvd formate,which some of them will never cover the dvd player.
or maybe the dvd player u got its only read VCD which is Video CD.
please read the formate which said on the top of the dvd player this will defently help you. as i said we got many different formates of dvds.
