Hotpoint WMA33 - Noisy bearings, Stops in cycle & Spin speed?

In Fast Spin mode, our Hotpoint WMA33 washing machine makes a noise like a WW2 Junkers dive bomber, so it will obviously need a new drum bearing.

Recently, it has also started to regularly stop in mid "D" or "E" cycle with the Prewash light flashing, but rearranging the clothes and trying again makes no difference. We have to give the clothes a hand-rinse then put them back for a Fast Spin (which always completes OK - but note that 'Rinse + Fast Spin' also aborts, also that cycle "J" often DOES complete OK as an alternative after "D" or "E" have failed).

Maybe we should just get a new machine - but I wonder whether the different maximum spin speeds of the different models are just done by hard-wiring values of the "Variable Spin" control of the top models? Could the WMA33 be given an even higher maximum spin speed, such as the 1400 or 1600rpm available with the WMA37, WMA62 and WMA63?

Are the 2004/5 models basically the same as the WMA30-33 models but with different fascias?

how do i get any panels of my washing machine wma33?

celine, November 2010
I know this is long-dead, but for future readers of the thread, save yourself a lot of time and effort and buy a new rear-half drum from Seme-Nedis, who supply the trade.
Their retail site is http://www.allourparts.com/

C00119357 :- Rear 1/2 Drum with Bearings, at £55

and buy a new spider - 'cos if it's been making the noise for a while, the shaft is probably corroded

C00117329 :- Spider at £31.75

Should only take a couple of hours with those two, and last for ages, as the bearing has been factory fitted!

i have a wma33 and when you start a cycle the water starts to fill the drum turn a few times then all the water pumps out and the door lock release's and the cycle finishes can you help ?

My WMA63 has just failed and the problem is the bearings and the whole back end needs replacing. My washing machine is over 5 years old and the charge from Hotpoint is £98 and includes all parts and Labour.

Is that a good all in price?

Rachel, April 2008
hi ron you must be in the london catchment area to be charged that amount! inside your door there is a date code the first two digets are the date of production and this should be able to identifi that its under 5yrs

Hi Darren,

"whole repair should cost only £89.98 take it from me as iam a engineer for them."

I phoned them and they are charging £94, plus they won't cover the cost of the parts unless I can produce a receipt to show the machine is less than 5 years old. As we bought it in Jan 2002, I don't see how Hotpoint could even have been making them 5 years ago - otherwise it was hanging around in someone's warehouse for at least 21 months???

Ron West, April 2005
call hotpoint i have a wma 33. had the whole drum pump motor and new control board changed all for 55 pounds. as the machine is covered by 5 year parts cover as they all are you only pay labour.
go too www.hotpoint.co.uk and click on atfer sales then service
good luck

the only true answer to these questions is yes you do need bearings! the electrical problem of it stopping is to do with the module card and motor this is showing up as an error code with the wash process lights staying on! the cheapest way to repair this is to call hotpoint as your parts are under a 5year gurantee if fitted by hotpoint the whole repair should cost only £89.98 take it from me as iam a engineer for them.

Thanks!

If I get a "Bearing & Seal" kit, is the "Drum Spider" something separate?

Will I need any special tools to fit it? Is there any fitting advice available apart from the sheet supplied in the kit (I've already done a web search)?

Ron West, April 2005
you will need to replace the drum bearings and the drum spider available as a kit online (do a google search) and it sounds like you will need to replace the cold water inlet valve as this is what will be stopping the rinse
