Ariston Microgenus 28 Cutting Out ("A01" fault)?

My Ariston Microgenus 28 MFFI combi boiler has heated water without a problem since installed. But since starting to use the CH function this Winter, it works for both CH and water for about an hour and then cuts out with error code "A01".

Re-setting it works for about 10 seconds then it shuts off again. However if I leave it for about an hour or so, it works again, for about another hour. The pressure remains the same at about "2.4" whether it works normally or has recently shut off. (It's almost 2yrs old) Does anyone have suggestions - my plumber's on holiday until late November?

I had the same issue. On my boiler the issue was a seized pump. You can free it up by using a large flat bladed screw driver and undoing the cover in the middle of the pump. Do this when it is OFF. Then using the screw driver twist the turbine backwards and forwards until the pump moves freely. Also bleed any air out of your radiators and check your pressure.

Hi I had the same problem and after reading some of the comments I thought I would investigate. ... and after 2 min of looking at the pcb I noticed a plug wasn't pushed home ...now it works thanks to ...Board Gais ☺

Alan, August 2015
Hi All - I had this issue after installing a new board - This error is not down to the board - the normal failure on these boards is a small diode that gets blown over time this prevents the fan from spinning and the air pressure sensor from sending a signal to the board Error 34. On Error A 01 follow the 3 igniter wires 2 go into a brown box 1 goes into the board on the right hand side - look at the other cables on those boxes they connect to the board on a grey vertical aligned connector - Check the fit of this connector it can look like it is pushed home but it is not. This is why the unit runs with the door opens and stops when closed the cable gets stretched and pulls the connector out just enough breaking the connection and preventing power to the igniter.

So basically switch boiler on, ignites, pressure gage all good and then CH and HW kicks in and comes on...then after about 2/3 mins the reset led light come on which the switches heating off and HW goes cold....I then press the reset LED Button and all goes back to normal but again after about 3 mins the CH/HW goes off.. Any answers

Hi,

I have a Microgenius 28 HE MFFI. I've had this boiler installed in the current property in 2007 years ago. But when I contacted Ariston, they formed that the PCB on my current boiler was changed last in 2009. I bought this property 2 years ago and my boiler has worked fine until now. I had it serviced 3 weeks ago and today suddenly it has started showing me Error fault A01. I wanted to ask if anyone one has had any luck recently similar to Yann in October 2010 where he decided to call Ariston (01494 755 600) and argued (gently) that it's a design fault. They relunctantly accepted to send someone. Engineer turned up next day, changed the PCB in ten minutes and said that it's something wrong with these boards and not that the flame sensor is too close to the ignition. If anyone has had any luck please advise

Hi, I have this troublesome boiler with the same A01 fault, I would be resetting the thing up to 15 times a day, and I have now noticed something odd that I would welcome any advice on.

Just out of curiousity I lowered the front panel that has the switches on to see inside. I left the panel in its lowered position and I noticed that the boiler didnt trip out. I have since ran random tests with the panel lowered and raised, and when it is raised it always starts tripping out after around 2-3 hours, yet with it lowered it never trips out! What is going on???

Ronnie, April 2013
Have had the same issue although I have to say that my 28 HE has operated absolutely faultlessly for the past 5-6 years (and I mean faultless - I even only have to top the pressure up, pre-emptively, about once a year).

Anyway I noted the post regarding moving the ignition detector away from the ignition electrodes and so I got out the manual for the boiler to ensure I would correctly identify the part in question. HERES THE INTERESTING PART...... the schematic in the manual clearly depicts the ignition detector wire pointing away from the 2 ignition wires (which point towards each other) but when I opened my boiler up ALL 3 were pointing towards each other!!

Anyway I have moved the Ignition Detector wire a couple of mm away and will see if that resolves my A01 issue.

Thanks to Rahim for his post

Hi, I am a qualified domestic gas engineer. I've lost count of the amount of repairs I've done to these boilers. Most of the faults i've repaired on these have been main board faults, one in particular had three boards in 12 months, I've spoken to collegues, and the general concensus is bad board design. I'm sure arriston are aware of this, but will not accnowledge. Complain bitterly to them, maybe you'll get some joy.

Just to make you aware, there are people now online doing repaired boards for all makes of boiler, at a fraction of the cost of manufacturer parts. So don't be ripped off. I've used these on several boilers with the customers consent, and have had no come back so far.
As for these boilers, my advise leave well alone (French crap), like their cars, lol. Worcester Bosch, or Ideal, both bullit proof.

steve, May 2012
hi all just to let you know that if you have a "a1" error then it is most likely to be a pcb problem, however this SHOULD be carried out by a trained engineer as your boiler WILL need re testing and commisioning

andrew, January 2012
I contacted Ariston about the exact same issue only today, and they were extremely unhelpful. Its appears that they have realised that forums like this exist, and therefore losing money. I mentioned that this was deemed a product fault by many engineers, and the chap I spoke to refused to admit this, and said this could be a fault attributed to a number of other factors. Customer service, what Customer Service?

Hi All been reading the above comments very interesting. I am in the UK and have one of these shitty boilers that is giving me the same error. Reading one of the comments above some one said to take the front cover off and there are These are 3 wires that run up the front of the boiler which need to be separated. Does ne 1 have ne visule photos that i can see which wire i need to look for. My house is very cold and an urgent reply would be very much appreciated.Kind regards
Usman.

Same A01 problem but with Microgenus 24, boiler keeps igniting even though it's already lit up. Plumber said the PCB needs changing so I looked on the Internet for prices as the boiler is four years old and no warranty.

Based on the comments everyone made in this thread, I decided to call Ariston (01494 755 600) and argued (gently) that it's a design fault. They relunctantly accepted to send someone but that it would the one and only time for this boiler. Engineer turned up next day, changed the PCB in ten minutes and said that it's something wrong with these boards and not that the flame sensor is too close to the ignition.

Either way, it's something that they are obviously aware of but to their credit, they did the work within one day of calling them so well impressed with their customer service.

Yann, October 2010
have replaced pcb, have replaced ignition, have replaced sensor and still getting AO1..... have move the three connecting wires, still not working

Same problem as everyone above with the A01 error. Kept resetting but after time became unusable. Boiler within the 2 year warranty by a little under 2 months.

Read all the replies below and with mixed feelings i called the '01494' number from Mo's post (thanks Mo!) Gave them Name, Address, phone number, boiler model and error code. advised someone would call me back.

Received a call from a local service company looking to arrange a visit, one in the area if ok to pop round now. Perfect.

Nice chap turned up, replaced part and tested. Confirmed that this is an extremely common problem!

No monies changed hands...yet anyway!! Will let you know if a bill lands on my doorstep in the near future...

Phone call to Ariston made at 9:20am
Engineer arrived with part at 10:05am

Who said customer service was dead :o)

Thanks for everybody's feedback on this subject. Was a great help.

I have an ariston microcondens which is is 5 years old and has just started this A01 problem. We have been happy with the boiler as this is the first major fault in 5 years (other issue has been a slow drip from pipe at bottom.

I'm just about to remove the front panel and have a quick look inside. interesting to see your comments on the PCB.

Stu Pot, January 2010
Hi
I have the same problem and the boiler is just over 2 yrs old. Can have heating only if I sit by it and constantly hit the re-set button every few seconds. Plumber wasnt sure but said aristons are terrible. Looked online & saw all the comments so have just ordered the pcb from ebay

Sue, December 2009
Hi I have same problem. I should be able to repaor the pcb myself, but Im not sure which wire etc to bend. Can someone please email me the description of what to do. Do I bend the pin on the connector on the board or just sperate the wires connecting to it. please contact me. The house is veru cold without it!
Which component on board will eventually die?

the A01 fault code is nearly always down to the pcb, 99% of the time in fact, its a common fault, but not common enough for ariston to be responsible for boilers out of the warantee. you can normaly check this yourself, while the tap is running check if the electrodes are still sparking even after the gas had lit, this means the pcb is not detecting the flame and trying to relight. eventualy it will lock out with a A01 code, if u reset it might work for a short time but eventualy u will get to the stage where it will no longer resart.

if your handy you can replace the pcb yourself, there is someone selling them on ebay for £85 thats a steel, its half the trade price never mind retail price!

pcb part number is 65103422 just search it on ebay!

I have 5 of these boilers in properties I rent :-( and all of them are s**t - keep away. Though the above is very interesting reading does anyone know how to go about trading standards/consumer direct to have ariston etc replace the boiler completely??

Graham, July 2009
I have Ariston Microgenus 24, installed 2 years ago. it starts to show this A01 recently. Resetting seems to work for a few days. I called the service and am waiting for the solution.

LX, May 2009
I have the same 'A01' fault code. Called out the engineer who had separated the three wires which appears to be a short term fix. The fault obviously cannot be easily repaired else Ariston would have done the right thing and recalled the boilers. At the very least one would expect them to replace the faulty components.

BPF, April 2009
Dont buy Ariston boilers, they are nasty cheap appliances with expensive parts. That's how they make their money

Rob Williams, April 2009
We had the same problem and have just had the PCB replaced. £230+ VAT

Spoke to Ariston who did not want to know.

Interestingly the boiler repair man said the PCB's were like gold dust. Not surprising as they seem to be common fault.

I've kept the old board and will contact Ariston again stating that there seems to be loads of problems with this boiler and why were some people getting it free outside of warranty and not others. The engineer that came out was Ariston approved (they gave me his number).

Never buy Ariston ...

MattN, December 2008
We have spoken to Ariston and they have sent us a new PCB after we mentioned all the comments on forums. They would not go as far to as say it was a manufacturing fault but said it was a gesture of goodwill to supply us with part. The boiler is just over two years old and they would not agree to pay for the labour, but as the part costs about 150 quid I did'nt really feel I had a choice. The engineer comes tommorrow and I am going to ask him for the old PCB,there is a company on ebay who recons them for about 40 quid.

Gary, December 2008
Thanks! Jim.
Yesterday, the ariston engineer came, and the days before I disscused the issue with ariston service department in Shanghai, and got the chance to change the PCB for free, so this time, it should be nice for me to have the problem solved. Yes, you are right, the PCB have some component demaged in this issue, very seems the capacitors near the flame sensor, I think change the capacitors should be OK. Thanks again.

Bo, September 2008
HI

Bo, Rahim's answer is spot on, just had ariston engineer here to fix same A 01 fault and said same as rahim, he bent the electrode probe on the left of the three away a few millimetres, that sorts the problem ,they have resolved this on new boilers now, but Bo he said that wont solve the problem alone, because the PCB is now damaged it will pack up shortly & have to be replaced.
Ariston were very helpfull, just asked my address & serial no of boiler & that was it.
hope this helps you & others.

jim, September 2008
Hi, Rahim,
Can I have your email? Is your boiler still work oK? I am facing the problem now and In China the warranty is one year (unfair :(!!) and my one and half years old Genus need me keep reseting to get the hot water, or the engineer said I need pay 1500RMB(about 150 Eur). I want try your method first.
Thanks,

Bo, September 2008
Your PCB needs replacing

genus, September 2008
so glad i looked on here
i had this fault and have forewarned my plumber who is coming tomorrow, many thanks

deemac, August 2008
Hi

I KNOW THE ANSWER!!

I had the same fault on a boiler that was exactly 2 years old. The warrantte engineer said it is a common problem. The ignition wires and flame sensor wires are too close together. These are 3 wires that run up the front of the boiler once you remove the front cover. They sit right in the front centre of the boiler. The problem is that the ignition spark jumps across to the flame sensor sending a spark down the wire and blowing the flame sensor on the PCB. So even though the boiler has ignited, the flame sensor tells the boiler there is no flame ans shuts it down after a few seconds.

Replacing the damaged sensor on the PCB or the whole PCB will rectify the problem but sooner or later the same thing will happen again. The trick is to nudge the flame sensor wire over and away from the ignition wires. My engineer did this with a flat head screw driver. He gently moved the wire on the left away from the other two by a matter of mm and said this was enough to stop the problem reoccuring. 3 weeks later and thank God no more problems.

Rahim, August 2008
Mo hi, just wondering how you got on with the repair of your Boiler, and mine has just started giving the infamus A01 fault, no sure how old the boiler is as it was in the property when we moved in, Did Ariston need any proof of warranty ?

SID, August 2008
Hi All,
I spoke to Ariston today on 01494 755 600 and this is a known fault. They are sending an engineer out, I bought the property off someone so not sure if i am in warranty but told them I was!
I spoke to the engineer and he told me that all A01 faults he had seen were a manufacturing fault and they rectify for free.

Good luck all,
Mo

Mo Talukder, August 2008
I have a 2 year old ariston microgenus 34 and the same thing keeps happening. Cutting out with a A01 fault sign which keeps coming on. I think it is just out of warranty but it appears this is a common fault. Has anyone made any headway with Ariston out of warranty?

Rahim, July 2008
I have had the same happen, just over 2 years old and just out of warranty! We have had the PCB board replaced and also had a new fan put in (kept tripping out my electrics) - fixed the problem....for 4 days, A01 error has started coming back....any ideas of what I can do?

Sarah, July 2008
surely if its a known problem the model should have been recalled. mine is doing the same as is less than 2 years old. may contact trading standards.

em, July 2008
WE HAVE THE SAME FAULT ON A BRAND NEW BOILER, WORKED FOR 45 MINUTES AND THEN A01 FAULT CODE EVEN THOUGH THE BOILER IS STILL IGNITING!

MR ANGRY, February 2008
Thanks for your comments and Fee - you're right. It was a reknown fault on that particular model according to the Ariston-sent technician. But Ariston didn't admit that overtly to me.

The PCB was replaced and I have heating and hot water again - at last!

Lisa C, November 2007
Hi there. I have had the same problem on my 2 year old installation. There is a 2 year warranty on Ariston Boilers so they should repair it free of charge. The engineer who came out to fix mine said this is a known issue and fixed it by replacing the PCB board. Its to do with some connection being too close to another one (how tech is that :-s). When they touch it causes a short and then you get repeated A01 message.
Hope you get sorted.

Fee, November 2007
Hi Lisa no help I know, but I have the same problem, have you managed to clear ityet? cheers
