Defragmenting a hard drive?

When I set my computer to defragment the hard drive it
starts the programme goes to 1 and then goes back to 0, it does this for 10 times and then tells me that it can go no further, a programme may be running, where do I go from here?. PC is running with Windows 98. 3gb HD, 288 RAM.

yep best to do defrag while PC runs in safe mode. This should do the trick. May be worthwhile leavign this running overnight depending on how big your hard drive is

Another possible cause is a lack of free space on the drive; it needs some to shunt data about. A 100MB or so should be plenty.

Turn off your screensaver, you'll probably find that this is set to run every 10 mins - to turn it off, right click on your desktop, then left click on properties, then click on the 'screen saver' tab.
if this still doesn't cure it, boot into safe mode, and run it then it - to boot to safe mode, turn your pc off, then turn it on, as soon as you turn it on, keep tapping the F8 key, then you'll see a menu, use your cursor keys to highlight Safe Mode, then press the enter key
