The lower thread is not being picked up by the top thread. Any suggestions as to how ot fix it?

Help! I think perhaps I am being a little dim but I have a three dial machine and despite looking in the instruction manual, I still can't work out which setting to use for satin stitch.

How do I check the timing on this machine bottom thread is not being picked up, fault occured after a needle snapped.
