how do I free a tape from my dual cassett player AIWA WX220?

When I power on my dual cassett player (AIWA WX220), the system goes into the play mode;but nothing happens. The dual cassett player will try to play, but nothing happens.(just make a noise trying to go forward and the tape will not turn. When I try to eject the tape, latch on tape 1 will not move and the system will not release the tape and the head on the cassett player will not release. (it stays in the play position against the tape) I can take the window off the unit, (Player 1) move the tape holder a bit, but the wheel that holds the tape/turns the tape during play, does not have enough space to free it,and I don't want to force it that could cause it to break. What action should be taken next?

Take the top off the unit so you see the back of the transports. Your belts that drive the capstans are probably stretched, but not yet broken, as they turn the capstan enough to turn the head engagement mechanism part way. (That is what stops you from ejecting the tape.) By turning the capstan flywheel with your finger, you should be able to back the head engagement off. (I'm not sure which direction, just try it each way a little.) Once backed off eject should work. Good luck! (I'm still looking for belts for mine.)

The belts have melted inside - unplug, remove cover & you will see 2 motors & wheels...black goo is the belts I this. THIS IS MY PROBLEM this AM. Now to find the belts. Hope a service center teck can find ones that will fit.
