If your CPU usage is spiking at 100% then it is likely that it is the result of a flawed Windows Security Update KB835732 which you have downloaded. Microsoft is aware of the problem but has kept relatively quiet about it as issuing a patch for a patch is not good PR.

The above link will detail how to unpatch the patch for Windows 2000. The strange thing about this Windows Security FLAW is that it doesn't affect every computer on which it has been installed.

It would also be a good idea to download Lavasoft AdAware SE, Spybot: Search & Destroy, and HiJack This. All are very good at keeping your computer clean and under your control. Switching from Internet Explorer over to OPERA will also reduce many of the security issues associated with IE.

Hope this helps you get back to normal.

Well Geoff Bates,
are you running a firewall ? did you block a program from the web? if both answers are yes there you go..
you may still be infected and probaly are.. for spyware you can get a beta free version of microsoft antispyware at mirosofts web site and also a free 2 week of super add blocker and with theres you probaly will find more troans or hijackers.. also please give more info and not just the problem .. what windows are you running .. ect ect
hope this helps ..

It could be a process running in your PC- that is hammering your CPU usage. Boot up in safe mode to and then check your CPU usuage. If its normal...its a software related prob

hows the fragmentation? how many programs are you trying to run at once? some programs are more cpu intensive than others some use a lot of the available memory what processor are you using? what operating system? what programs?
