How can I fix my Worcester 24i RSF combi boiler?

My Worcester Bosch 24i RSF combi boiler periodocally refuses to ignite when the hot water taps are turned on or when the central heating is activated. British Gas replaced the water flow switch but this did not remedy the periodic problem. However whenever they were called back the boiler decided to work perfectly - only to break down after they left. The pump and fan all seem fine and the overheat thermostat is not tripping. When it's playing up a good slap around the gas and water flow valves gets things going again. Any suggestions?

I have a Worcester 24i RSF combi boiler, who works normal on central heating, but it has a problem on domestic hot water.
Frequently if I close a hot water tap I hear abnormal noise and I see pressure variations on pressure gauge.
Could you tell me, please if the cause might be the expansion vessel or else.
May I change easy this EV ?

Much thanks

what is wrong with my boiler its loosing water and no heating or hot water

boiler loosing water no hot water

I am a heating engineer
if the customer buys the part themselves, that part cannot be garunteed by the gas safe engineer.
and you will most probably find that it is hard to get an engineer that is willing to check a gas valve fitted by a random joe blogs.
Oh and by the way as soon as a non qualified person takes the cover off a gas appliance they are breaking the law.

Hi people my Worcester 24i rsf central heating will not ignite but when I turn the hot water on it ignights and then if I turn the he off the CH stays on, any advice please

My boiler needed a new fan as it made a lot of noise before it broke, now it works after the electricians fixed it.but they told me if the water pressure goes up past half,to turn the black tap.my boiler went out and the pressure went past half, water cold for several hours and no heating,I tured the black tap.looked the same, but later water was hot again.put tap back to normal position.so far so good..if you switch everything off the pressure seems to align with arrow..but I needed a hot water so had to put boiler on again.

Hi what would ne the system guage pressure on the 24i rsf..is it 1.5 or 2.5?

Yash, March 2013
Hi I have a Worcester boiler model 24i Rsf and it fails to ignite.I have switched off the mains but still not working. Also I dont know the water pressure to set it as it is on 1.5 on the system gauge at the moment.Any chance you can help please. Thanks

With the Worcester 24i RSF, a common fault after a few years is that the solenoid for the gas valve stops working. However, you cannot buy the solenoid separately so you have to buy the whole valve assembly. It can be fitted within an hour.

However, upon replacing the gas valve, some boilers still fail to fire up for CH. In this case, if your air switch is ok and your trip switch is ok, then it is a fault with the PCB (usually the relay switch for CH ignition)... I would recommend buying a reconditioned PCB board from a reputable company as they recon them with better parts.

In response to caroline; the valve for water pressure is underneath the boiler at the back. There should be a little black tap, you need to open it up and keep it open until you can see the pressure guage rising to meet the red needle.
Hope this helps

hi the pressure on my worcester 24 i rsf has dropped, but i have no instructions at all, how do i find the tap to allow water in for the pressure to rise? thanks in advance. caroline

Hi all, same problem with the 24i RSF.
Have had same problem as most above and found remedy of turning off CH and running hot tap full blast until it was running hot water, then turning CH thermostat back on and hot tap off usually did the trick.
However, this morning we've been freezing despote all attempts.
After reading the gas valve banging trick, I wasn't happy to do so with really cold pipes in case of fracture, so tapped a magnetic screwdriver on the valve a few times with mains etc on and hey presto, pilot light flared up!!!
Just though someone may prefer this instead of hammering away at the valve lol
Thanks everyone!!

Thanks to Louise for the tip as follows

"I know how frustrated you are. My boiler is also intermitantly failing to ignite and I have a very nice repair man who is as frustrated as me. I find with mine that if you turn the system off at the programer, run the hot water tap for a couple of minutes, turn off the tap and turn on the programer it then works again. My repair man has now replaced the most obvious things and the next is the circuit board which is going to cost a lot of money. My boiler is only 3 years old but as I only moved here in july last year I dont know if this is an old or new fault."

After waiting for nearly three weeks for a fan assembly to be fitted, the repair man could not get it started and ordered a new valve. I tried this tip not really thinking it wouldn't work....IT DID...I'ts magic. Whoever thought of that is brilliant. Thanks again :)

can not turn down the water temp for the hot water worcester 24i rsf combi

rennoir, October 2009
Hi...my worcester 24i/28i junior combi decided to just stop working..when I turned the hot water on for a shower. The boiler made a buzzing noise, the red light was flashing 4 times a second and it was no go on the heating as well. The gas did not seem to be getting to the boiler. My house is located in the middle of nowhere , no mains gas as yet so gas bottle fed.(LPG)The problem was the pipe that led from the bottles...loosened the nut and there was a build up of oil that once released allowed the boiler to fire up again. I realise most people have mains gas but hopefully my experience may be of help to someone.

I have had a similar problem with a 24i RSF, I have changed the gas valve but cannot get the minimum burner pressure to set, any ideas?

Hello, i would just like to say i got my boiler going on my worcester 24i by tapping the gas valve and pressing the reset button on the top of the boiler, its a RED button on the very top and please make sure your pressure hasnt dropped as this can stop the boiler from firing up too, hope this helps. i have a worcester 24i doing the same also, fan starts pump and then no ignition, i did give it a few bangs on the gas valve and hey presto it came on, had someone out to say it was the circuit board and its not so glad i didnt get him to replace it , looking to replace the gas valve myself then have a corgi registerd service engineer round to check i have no gas leaks and get a certificate.

ross, February 2009
mine is doing a similar thing but after running for anything between 10 and 60 mins it will suddenly cut off and not reignite unless i leave it for ages? brand new pcb which was installed 20th december so it cant be that? any ideas?

I have a a Bosch 24i RSF approx 6years old and doing the same thing, every so often is refuses to light, if you look through the pilot window then make a demand for hot water or heating, the burner comes on but you can see it has a very weak flame as though it is lacking gas, however if you tap the Gas valve then is suddenly fires up, i suspect the solenoid inside the gas valve is sticking. I am looking for one on ebay, i will let keep you posted, but for the time being the tapping trick seems to work every time

i am corgi registered plumber and i have had the same problem with my boiler, changed the gas valve and everything sound....

jason, October 2008
I've this same problem, and I've just used the "Trouble Shooting Guide" at the back of the manual (this was an A4 16-page booklet that was in the house when we bought it) and that has led me to the conclusion that it is the Gas Valve which needs replacing.

This seems to be a common problem looking online.

They can be bought for £85+VAT.

I have exactly the same problem, i have had a plumber who was trying to charge me 189 pound for a new gas valve as it is not letting enough gas through to ignite. i have found them on the internet for 79-85 pound though so you will only have to pay for it to be fitted.
