I have an emerson tv and can't program the universal remote, I have tried a few different types and still nothing works. Could my remote sensor be bad and how do I tell and fix it?

first of all check your remotes by holding down a button and viewing the light at the top of your remote through a digital camera if you can see a red light your remote is working fine and then it is the sensor which probably needs to by disconected from the board and than re-soildered back on good luck with this
