Hi Ian, did you just add this burner to your computer? If so you must set the jumpers on the back of the drive so that it is recognized as SLAVE or Cable Select otherwise the two drives conflict with each other. Usually you can see a diagram of how the jumpers are connected on the front of the drive. The jumper just slips off and on easily. There are three normal settings for the drive jumper (M) Master (S) Slave and (CS) for Cable Select. This is a common problem many people have when they add an additional drive. Hope this helps. `T` gave the exact answer you need. CD-DVD combo drives use different heads for CD`s and DVD`s and it`s very possible that one of the heads (the CD head) has given up the ghost.
They`re so cheap nowadays, it`s not worth messing about with them if they play up ... get a new one.
