I need to fix a gear?

How do I repair the tread/gear on my Elna supermatic. I am unsure of the terminology, however, I took it apart enough to see that the shaft which operates the needle has a metal gear and a non-metal track (tread?). When you run the machine you hear nocks and can see the gear pausing on the treadlike gear. I found two small dinks in the treadlike gear and it throws the whole shaft out of alignment. clunk, clunk, Help!

Hello carole,
You will need to replace the gear and then retime the machine, is it the gear underneath the bobbin case ?
