when I pull the needles out to cast on and push the carriage across with the yarn in, the yarn just lies across the needles. when I push the needles to hold position and cast on by hand, the carriage jams

Have you sprayed the underside of the carriage just on the parts that are suppose to move with super lube? I know that I have that problem after the machine has been sitting for a long time. After spraying try moving all the things that move on the carriage such as hold button, tuck, part, tension etc. Then try moving the carriage across some needles.

Hello Joan,
Are the latches opening? you need to check the carriage to make sure everything is springing back as it should do.
