If you have a server, you could set the server up as a DHCP server, which means it will dish out dynamic IP adresses to any clients on the network, IE your notebook.
Go to Add Remove Programs and select Add Remove Windows COmponents, on the erver this is. From here you will be able to add DHCP to your server. If you are running 2003 server then the first screen to boot up, manageing server roles I think it is called will allow you to add DHCP from there.
Your noteoobk will need to be set up to "Obtain a DHCP address".
Have a look at the IPconfig utility from a command prompt too. Ipconfig /? for help.
