I have noticed that if a signal is not present , ie, not tuned to the Tv station, or no signal going into the scart or the front Camcorder, etc phonos. It assumes you dont have a signal, and does not record. Beyond that i cant tell you any more. but also try a different disc and see what happens.
At the moment i have asked Techwood direct about replacement drives. As these are usually the first thing to go wrong. I have took my aedvdrs7 apart and seen that the drive is a standard IDE type, that are used in PC,s. this is good, as it means, unlike my Sony GRX210, you can maybe get an internal writer and replace the broken one. My Sony, has a weird ribbon config, meaning i have to buy a replacement drive direct from them, for £80.
there again, i got my techwood off ebay refurbed for £24, so its maybe easier to just buy another!
