Why does my computer stall when I put in a DVD/CD?

Does anyone know why computes (all that I've used) freeze when a DVD or CD is being loaded? It's like the whole machine stops and waits for the disk to spin up and load or fail to load. I don't want my system to care what the DVD drive is doing, if a disk becomes avaiable great, but don't stop everything else and wait. Are there better drivers out there? A windows (XP) patch maybe?

Thank you.
Nick.

You probably have too much going on for the amount of real memory (RAM) that your PC has installed.

For XP SP2 512MBytes is what you should have installed. Additionally clean up and defrag your hard drive
