My whirlpool AWM 1404/4 is skipping washing cycles. Can I fix?

My whirlpool AWM 1404/4 is skipping washing cycles - ie I put it on 8 or 9 and it fills up with water, agitiates for 2 or 3 mins then drains and goes straight onto rinse so a cycle takes 35 or so mins. The dial is also very stiff to turn. As a disabled Mum I am trying to see if I can fix without an expensive bill so please help!!

sounds like a faulty heater or thermostat.
