I cannot use "spelling" when i want to write a new message?

When i go into "create mail" in outlook express, the "new message" box appears but the "spelling" box along the top row does not light up for me to use, so after i have wrote a letter i'am unable to spell check it.

Microsoft Express uses the spelling checker provided with the following Microsoft Office programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not have one of these programs installed, the Spelling command is not available.
