Hi Lee - first, I'm not a big fan of Norton Security it does take a lot of space up. Consider AVGFREE - you can Google it just make sure you get the free one unless you want to pay. I have used this for years and nothing had got through - and the price is right! If you choose to use the AVG after you download it you will want to uninstall the Norton before you load the AVG. To uninstall go to START, CONTROL PANEL, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS scroll down to the Norton/Symantic file(s) and click on the "remove". You might have to restart your computer when your done. Do that and then go to START, RUN, BROWSE and point to the AVG file you downloaded, double click on it and then click "OK" in the run window. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Second, if you look down at the lower right corner of your screen next to the clock you will see icons. All of those icons are running at the same time. Some of them you want - like your virus protection etc. You can Right-Click on them to find out what they are and close them if you don't need them. They will appear the next time you start your computer but there is a way to get rid of them altogether. (another topic) Sometimes the virus program do an automatic scan of your hard drive - depending on the speed of your computer this may slow down the computer during the scan. The AVG scan is done in the background and I don't even know it's going on. Another plus for them! If you find you still have problems you can email me (shopbruce@gmail.com) and we'll see if there's something else going on. Hope this helps!

Also you may be surfing the net logged on with administration rights, so all "nasty" software has full access to your operating system. You can spend HOURS running various removal tools and scanning software (stinger, AdAware, SPybot) and still have a slow P.C. Even Microsoft say that sometimes it's quicker to reload your operating system, ensuring you have backed up. And create a user account that is NOT an administrator, and use this one when you surf.

Norton is a Resource hog. If you have a 30 day trail Look at avast anti virus (free) and comodo firewall (free). Also what is your OS and how much memory do you have Vista should have 2GB. Look at your startup in programs and see if ther is something you wouldn't be using often and remove it from startup. You can look at your task bar and see if there is anything you want to stop.
