Problems with montor resolution?

I have a problem with a MV940 Desktop Compaq Monitor resolution settings running from an Astral C4200 Mini Tower running Windows XP.the problemsstarted when I chose a resolution setting that is out of the monitors range. Then thing went wrong, now I can't get the computer to start up properly it displays an message telling me to reset the monitor and then it goes into sleep mode. I have lost my manual and cant remember how re boot or bypass this problem

Try this. Turn on you computer press the F8 key and chosse Safe Mode. When XP is up and running in safe mode right click on the screen and reset the display.

You may need to shut down your computer and reboot. During reboot hit F8 or the Del button to go to setup(It is different on each machine but look for the prompt on the screen that says setup). When in setup look for safe mode with video as an option and hit ok. Your computer should now boot up in safe mode with basic video capabilities. My suggestion from here would be to go to Control panel/Display and reset your monitor the way you had it. Restart from there and this may do it.
