how to fix a burnt out motor?

I have a freecom external harddrive, I plugged in the wrong adapter and burnt out something inside. now it won't switch on!
Any ideas on repairing it. Do you thing the disk will be damaged?
My wife sugests buying a new unit and swapping the drives over.

I would think that the circuit board inside which transforms the input voltage will most likely have burnt out. Its worthwhile trying another hard drive enclosure because usually the external hard drives have a normal hard drive inside. Open it up and see if it has a normal hard drive. If it does, then its worthwhile trying another enclosure which is around £20.

Hope this information helps...
