Did I just blow $300 or?

I put the wrong voltage power cord (recharger) into my Creative Jukebox 60 gig MP3 player.

Smoke came out. I imagine it's fried to the point of no return.

I can live with that. But, can I salvage the hard drive and put it into another system?

I have over 50 gigs of information that I can't get anywhere else.

Can I salvage?

Hi there.

As long as you haven't damaged the HDD itself then there shouldn't be a problem. If you're prepared to buy another Zen to replace your cooked one, then you could just open the new one up and replace the new HDD with the one from your dead Zen.

If it's the new Zen touch, then you should have a Hitachi 1.8" 'Travelstar' hard drive in there. It will obviously invalidate the warranty if you crack the case on your new unit, but if the data on your old HDD is important to you then I guess that's not an issue.

It's quite fiddly (and slightly nerve racking) to change the hard disk, but if you decide to give it a go I can offer you some tips, so let me know how you get along with it. If you do get a new Zen and decide to change the hard drive then I'd also be interested in buying the new one from you as my Zen works fine but the HDD has failed and I've lost all my data so I'm looking for a replacement drive.

If you can't change the drive yourself, then I could probably arrange to do it for you if you want to contact me and arrange something? I'm in the UK at the moment, but will be back in the US in a couple of weeks. You can contact me directly at;
padlacanu@hotmail.com if you want to?

I hope that helps?

All the best.
