Can I fix Renault Scenic (2006) air conditioning?

Our Scenic's air con has stopped blowing cold air when switched on. The air con light is still lit and everything else (fan etc) seems to be working fine. I've checked all the fuses and none have blown. Could it
just have run out of gas and need to be re-charged?? Seems a little early as the car is only 2 years old. Any help appreciated!

where is the pressure sensor

Mr Phil Kent, September 2011
Hi,
I was recalled for something to do with software updated, I went the west London Renault dealer and after a 2hrs check I was given back the car that was for free, but on the other side they suggested a lot of faults which needs to be sorted and the cost (2800), while I am on my way home the Air Con has failed, it stopped working. what really surprises me was when I was going the Air con was on and its was working 100% and now its not......has anyone got a similar problem?

My 2005 Grande Scenic had the aircon fail last year. It, needed a new condensor.(the supplying garage fitted this for free)

This summer the aircon is not working again, Kwik fit regassed it for £29 and it worked for 2 weeks. They regassed again for free (and said they could not find any leaks) and again it worked for 2 weeks!
This time it is the liquid pipe with a pressure sensor on it which is leaking but Renault do not have any spare pipes! I got a second hand one but this is also corroded! What is next?

yes it was the pressure sensor that was faulty, its now replaced and working perfect the job is done for £180,when Browns garage called renault for the part as it is main dealer available only they said it is very, very common problem,so before you go to your main reanault dealer take it to your local garage to have a diagnostics done to save you fortune, people live in sussex,i higly recomend the Browns garage in Haywards Heath!

The Turk, June 2010
hello everyone now the my check emission fault is sorted by my local independent garage "Browns Garage"in Haywards Heath by simply changing the coil pack, now i have a aircon that doesnt work!but again Chris the owner of the garage had tested the system regassed it but it didnt work when when he did a diagnostic check the fault was the pressure sensor, which now he ordered and will fit it tommorow, hopfuly this will sort it out, will let you guy knw again..

I cannot go to the website renaultforums co uk - i just get "Account Suspended" - the danish Renault Forums are, to say the least, dead, so it would be noce to have another source of knowledge! - Are there any other good forums, or what could i do to get renaultforums working (is the website down?)

where is the air con pressure sensor on grand scenic 1.9 dci?

mark shipman, April 2010
My 2006 Grand Scenic is still undergoing work on faulty A/C. it fails regularly every 6 months and I take it in after contacting Renault and it comes out working, but they tell me they can find nothing wrong. It is now 4 years old and was in again last week! For free so far.

I have had all the excuses listed above, all sorts of parts changed and it still does it!

I have a 2006 scenic. The air con stopped working last year just before the warranty expired. Renault told me that there is no gas which is caused by not using the air con regularly. They said that when the air con is on the lubricant within the system circulates and stops the rubber tubes from drying out and deteriorating so when not used for long periods holes can form in the tubes. That has never happened on all my previous cars (not Renault)! Anyway they tried to charge me £300 to re-gas. In the end they did the job for nothing as a gesture of goodwill. That was just under a year ago and now the air con has stopped working again! Not sure of my chances in getting Renault to fix it again for nothing!!!

We have a 2007 Grand Scenic. We only have 14000 on clock. Air con stopped working and also had an audible whine. Kwik fit would have regassed for £45 BUT, that would mean changing the nozzle on their gas lead, they obviously have so much work on they don't want my business.
Renault said that they would only regas for us if we had air con serviced. We are still under warranty, their get out is that you are not covered if there is any damage
ie from stones etc.
So had to pay £95 for ''air con service'' and all they did was look quickly and regas it.
Thanks Renault. Last time we purchase one of your products, your attitude sucks.

sounds like your car has run out of gas due to a leak proberly in the condenser

My scenic has just been in the garage for a week, 4th time in 2yrs 8 months and they assure me it's been fixed, same as the last 3 times. I have got Renault involved the last twice and thank goodness get rid of the car in july.

Hi-I have a 56 plate Scenic with an ongoing aircon issue that has seen a host of "fixes" by Renault. Varying from the onboard software being updated, ignition coil packs, module (or something similar) behind the dashboard. Still not working. Getting boring now as Sept sees the car 3 years old and been in their workshops loads of times. If any of you out there have any doubts whether your aircon works, be it failing on heater fan number 4 with aircon switched on or just cool air and not icy when selected, get it into Renault as mine now needs Renault to send down a whizz kid from their technical division to scratch his head. Renault have clearly cocked up here with too many onboard gizmo/gadgets and not reliable!!

By the sounds of all your problems, it is the Pressure Sensor that has gone, which is a common fault on Scenic Aircon systems.

Renault quoted me £142 to supply and fit the part, but I will be fixing myself as it is just a case of taking off the plastic engine cover underneath, locating the aircon tubes and unscrewing the part and putting the new one in.

The guy who was quoted around £800, don't pay it! They are ripping you off!

The guy who said Heater setting 4 doesn't work, this is another known fault of the Scenic. It's a connector that needs replacing which, although a bit fiddly to change, can be done by yourself. It's located behind the tiny storage space infront of the steering wheel, next to the dash layout. That cubby hole pops out and you can see it from there. Change the connector and away you go.
For great advice on Scenic's you can go to www. renaultforums.co.uk as there is a mind of useful information on that website.

Anyone had the light disappear where the heater controls are? Renault want £200+ to replace a circuit board behind the controls to illumiate everything again. It takes 5 mins to take everything off so you can gain access to it!

Don't believe everything Renault tell you. I've just changed the EGR valve as it was causing no end of problems on my 4-yr old Scenic with 84k on the clock. Was quoted nearly £300 to replace it. A Renault mechanic replaced it for me in 30 mins for £45 plus the part cost of £100. Renault quoted 2.5 hours to repalce it!

The garage is targeted on costs, not on the service they provide you. Remember that when they try to charge to £850 for an aircon system when it's probably the pressure sensor that is faulty!

www.breakeryard.com will supply you 2nd hand parts at very reasonable prices!

All that glitters is not Renault! lol
Hope all that information helps!

Hi all,

Kwik fit re gassed the system for 44.99 and seemed to work fine for a few weeks. We now have another problem though. When switched on it's only blowing cold air out of the passenger vents, the driver gets a lovely blast of warm air. I'm going to see if I can find any blockagaes this weekend as I can't understand why it's only working on one side.

Tom, July 2008
My Air Con stopped working 3 weeks ago. Same as Tom, fan working but just stopped blowing cold air. We had the air con service and regassed butlost cooling within the hour. This was 1 week after a 3 year warranty finished. Just had an estimate of £750 to get it fixed. Tom have you any further news on your fault.

Paul, July 2008
My air con is not working as well as it should on my 2006 Scenic, and also when fan speed 4 is selected the fan turns off altogether. I guess top up gas for the aircon or has anyone any suggestions??

Geoff in Bangor NI, June 2008
Same thing happened to me. Call Renault on 08000723372. They know about the fault and are working on a fix.

I'm going to write to Watchdog. Suggest you do too.

Jeff Booth, June 2008
Thanks everyone, it was the gas. I got it re-charged at Kwik Fit for £44.95 and it's now working fine. Report showed 0kg recovered, they also checked the system after the re-fill and it wasn't loosing pressure so I guess it was maybe time and the seals. (The car is an import so although reg 2006 was probably made 2005 making it 3 years old)

Tom Leather, June 2008
Hi Tom

I also have a Scenic (the 7 seater - if this makes any difference) 2006 and my air conditioning simply stopped blowing cold air also, same as yours - fans etc are still working fine. I took the car to a dealer and after leaving the car with them practically all day they said that the 'compressor' has failed. As the car is just outside the warrenty and the car has only done 50k km and that the fault is 'not common' the dealer informs me that Renault would fund 40% of the cost to fix it. The total cost is arround €1200 (£850) which seems very expensive. I'm going for a second opinion - as I am hoping its simply the gas....Have you had any joy yet?

mark, June 2008
I've been told by a dealer that there's a fault in the programming of the chip; the air conditioning fails permanently if you try to run it when the fan's on 4. The chip has to be re-programmed. Sounds like nonsense to me, unless someone else has heard the same thing.

Jim, June 2008
Hi Tom, low gas is the most likely cause, you only need a pin hole in the heat exchanger and the gas will be gone, if you have a UV light (security marker pens) the gas contains a dye that show up under UV light so it will show where you have the leak
