Maytag LSG 1000 (washer/dryer combo) won't spin?

The machine will spin for about 3 seconds then it displays error code "L". If the door lock switch is the problem, the part will only cost about $11.00. I am not the world's most mechanical person. Is this something I should try to replace myself? If the control board is the problem, the part costs $200+ and I doubt that would be within reach as a do it yourselfer. Would the cost be worth it on a 20 year old machine? Is there a way I can tell if its the switch or the board? I hate give up the machine because it's just the right size for our small household. Thank you for your advice.

It appears easy enough to replace either the switch or the board. the hardest part is removing the panels to access the parts. there are two screws on the bottom "kick" of the washer front (outside left and right) and two screws on the top of the dryer front. after that you are dealing with clips. just make sure to unplug both cords.
