Alright Martin. Any older cd-rom for a laptop should work. The brand doesn't matter either. What's importasnt is the technology. Your wife's machine is designed for a 2x speed cd-rom. And it's probably an IDE drive. That's pretty ancient considering 4x was the speed of my first cd-rom and that was in 1997. I would guess you wouldn't get a new one as they probably don't make them any more. If it was me i'd go down to the nearest PC shop and ask the geek behind the counter if he has any spare parts of that nature. You never know your donald duck i got 128mb of ram at my local shop for 4 quid a few years ago and that was a damn good deal. It would be a crime to put a fast cd-rom in an older machine and it probably wouldn't work. You might get away with using a 4x you never know. Maybe ebay. A good seller could help you out if you asked him about the product before buying. Hope this helps. Bye

Hi Lynchy
Armada its the wifes, it only has a disket drive at the moment but it is surposed to be a multiport, so you just slip the disc drive out and slip the cd drive in!!!

Your too vague. there are several compaq 7400 models. Compaq Armada 7400 being one. In which case you will need a 2x speed drive from what i've been reading. Which is quite slow. A faster one might be wasted on such a machine. Then there's
Hp Compaq Business Notebook Nx7400 - Core 2 Duo T7200 2 Ghz - 15.4" Tft which a lot better and takes one of these
