Thanks Maximo. I managed to get the belt back on but the grinding noise still really bad. The washer dryer was guaranteed for a year but is now 18 months old. I know I definately overload the machine and its constantly on -at least once a day but I never use the dryer because its rubbish and make the clothes smell horrible. Tried poking about to see if anything caught between the two drums as had a bra wire caught there before but can't get into it - think a new machine is the answer. Thanks alot for taking the time to answer my question.

If the machine is grinding when the drum turns, then either there is something caught between the inner and outer drums or it's time for either new bearings or a new machine. An intact belt that has come off the drum is usually a sign of worn bearings that have made the pulley wheel wobble. However, sometimes if the machine has been working too hard with heavy loads , the pulley wheel can work loose off the shaft and shedd the intact belt.
Check your machine's warranty first before anything else, and try a little detective work to eliminate the noise.
