Don't think you'll like this answer_ but your question specifically states getting rid of the virus for free_ so here goes_ there are two methods i know which both work_
the first is to format your hard drive and MAKE SURE you delete something called the MBR (Memory Boot Record) at the same time_ in other words a complete format_ not a quick one!
BE SURE TO BURN ALL YOUR PERSONAL FILES ONTO CD BEFORE YOU DO THIS_ and only do it if you have software cd's to install_ to replace not only the programs you use but also the Operating System. In other words_ if you don't have a Windows Setup disk then DO NOT choose this option!
The second option is to study with the Open University who issue you with free anti-virus software for the whole year that you're studying_ though ofcourse the course might not be free!
Have you tried buying a PC magazine with a free CD on it? Choose one that is advertising trial anti-virus software BUT ONLY DO THIS ONE TIME because if you do it twice then the two packages will clash and you'll have even more problems
