My Panasonic DMR-ES35's laser died. Can I finalize discs on another machine?

I have about 40 discs made on this machine that are NOT finalized because I was adding to them. Now that the Panasonic is kaput, must I buy another Panasonic DVD recorder to finalize these discs or will another brand do as well? Or am i completely out of luck? And my discs cannot now be finalized on any machine ( and thus unplayable and all content lost?)
Please help-- years of archives and no VCR tapes to back them up.....
thanks.

As long as you use a recorder of the same brand, you should be able to finalise perfectly. Apart from that, there isn't any out of the box solution.

Buy the exact same brand and it should work. If you buy the exact same brand and model -- look on ebay -- your chances are almost 100%. I have two different panasonics and use one to finalize the others all the time.
