my sink waste disposal unit is shredding but not disposing?

I have fitted a new sink waste disposal unit, it is shredding ok, but not disposing. The shredded waste is sitting above the blades.

Have you turned the tap on? Water must flow through the unit while it is shredding to flush the bits away.
