The window is in my bedroom and gradually over the last year or so the gap between the window and frame has got larger. The gap when window is closed is about 6 mms and now I have to put two layers of adhesive tape round the frame to ensure a relatively draught free environment.

The window is a upvc and opens and closes via a lockable handle... no problem the window still locks and unlocks.

you need to replace your hinges also check if there are locking wedges on the hinge side which may not be locating correctly making your gap even bigger.to check this remove one wedge

check your hinges! your hinges sit inside a groove and if they`re not a tight fit then over time they will slip forward as they are only secured with small screws (i have seen this before.) you may need to drill an extra couple of holes through the hinge and re-fix but be wary that the hinge runs on a slider and you don`t want the sliding block to hit the new screws.
also your gasket (rubber) may have compressed and may need changing.
5mm does seem alot.
