what brand of dvds does my emerson ewr20v4 use?

i have an emerson ewv20v4 dvd recorder with video cassette recorder and every time I try to record a dvd I get and error message, cannot record on this disk, or bad disk what is going on. Thsi unit is brand new and I am confused on what brand of dvd to use

ie. Use DVD-R or DVD-RW.
Actual brand shouldn't matter. Although I would use quality branded discs.
