If you are using MS Windows XP operating System you will need a compatible scanner driver. I'm using XP Home (SP2), had the same problem and solved it successfully by downloading and installing the Visioneer 4400 driver. Go to http://www.visioneer-europe.com/support/4400.htm#drivers . good luck.
