why does my boiler switch on every couple of hours for 30 seconds or so even though heat or hot water has not been asked for

it is a recent boiler, (new build house) what you said makes sense
but it still wakes me up 4 or 5 times a night

if it is a recent boiler it probably has a warm start feature which keeps the plate heat exchanger that does your hot water at 61 degrees to give you the impretion that you get hot water at the taps quicker.as this temp falls the boiler automatically comes on to top up temp this can happen at regular intervalls
