Is it safe to connect wires?

I am remolding my bathroom and want to relocate the light fixture, however the existing electrical wire is not long enough. To make the wire longer is it safe to splice a 12x2 wire with ground to the existing 14x2 wire with ground.

Keith, you should have noted how the wires were originally connected to the ceiling rose before you disconnected them. One set of wires will be to the supply and the other to the wall switch.

If you do not have or know how to use a multi-meter you will need an electrician.

i am hoping to fit a new spotlight (4 seperates) on rail, halogen and dimmable. Having disconnected the ceiling rose I have found 2 wires each with 3 cabels, red, black and bare ? My new box has room for 3 only - how do I connect - do I join the 2 red into seperate terminal block, connect the 2 neutrals and use black into spare and live.Help

If you are in the UK what you are doing is not legal. (For safety reasons.)
