downstairs radiators don't work?

my upstairs radiators are working fine, very warm, but downstairs not heating up, only when I turn upstairs radiators off. when upstairs radiators turned back on , downstairs go cold again. pump is working fine, motirised valve working fine, room thermostat working fine. please help!

I bow to Joe the plumber - Balancing gets my vote - Upstairs radiators eating all the heat before the water arrives downstairs - need to close off the lock valves a bit on the warm ones and open up a bit on the colder ones - my house could do with this treatment - Thanks Joe.

have you had any work done recently on the central heating as it looks as though your system might be unbalanced?this means that all the heat is being taken by your upstairs radiators..... or you might have an airlock somewhere...have you tried bleeding all the radiators...... are you sure your pump is ok ..is it spinning or just vibrating (could be seized..check by removing large flat nut on side and view/feel if spindle is turning....? try increasing speed on side of pump to see if that improves it . Check the overflow/header CH tank in the roof (if you have one ) to make sure it has not run out of water.(very common problem !..causes air to get into the system) .
