programme button goes round and round?

The washing machine lets in water etc but will not stick to the programme ie D. Once it is turned on the programme disc just clicks its way around and around and never stops. I can pull the plug out to stop the machine but obviously nothing is clean as it seems unable to stick to a programme. Is this easy to fix?

Indication of a fault within the machine - i'd start with the heater.
check the heater and thermostat connections and the connections on the timer, (looking for a burnt out terminal or wire). The machine would have stopped in heat pause, and is waiting for the water to reach the correct temperature before advancing on.
