why is my wireless connection so poor?

I am trying to connect a second computer upstairs using a wireless connection via a wireless stick but it kept kicking me off the internet and is now not connecting at all. The signal is very poor. Do I need to boost it in some way?

This topic has long confused me too. Right now I'm using a Macbook with 100% signal from my router at the other end of the house, yet the desktop PC to my left drops in and out and never gets about 30% signal. The wireless adapter is quite new, and is a decent Netgear. Can't understand how there can be such a massive difference!

Could be a signal problem, try plugging the wireless stick on front of the PC (if you have a USB port on the front or use a USB extension cable and leave the stick on top of the PC. I would suggest you try to rule out a signal problem first, befoe you get to the more advanced settings like WIFI channel changing and security settings.

Another thing to try might be a high-gain antenna for your router or your receiver (if your receiver uses an antenna). That should boost the signal strength a little.

First make sure that it is only a signal level problem and not something else. Bring the computer from upstairs back down to somewher much closer to the wireless transmitter. If it works properly then you are confident that it is only signal level.

Sometimes just moving either the access point or the pc just a few feet will give some improvement.
