to lock the door i need to lift the handle then turn the key. recently the handle is very difficult to lift and i think i can adjust the hinge but i am unsure of how the hinge works/can be adjusted

If the hinges are a pin type hinge then there should be a allen head screw at the end of the sash piece, probably covered by a bung.
If a Butt hinge then there should be allen key adjusters on the frame piece of the hinge.
