Front loading Kenmore stops mid-cycle...help?

My front loading Kenmore washer -model #417 - stops part way through and flashes "E 10". If I change the setting (ie. to delicate) it will sometimes finish the cycle. I have tried unplugging to reset it, but to no avail. Any suggestions?
