Wall pendulum clock maintenance?

How do you clean and oil, a wall pendulum clock? and give it a good service.

I was told years ago to suspend it above some parafin, and let the fumes clean and oil it; would that work?

Gears and pinions should be clean and dry, if so leave well alone
Springs, rubbing parts, pivots (spindles) and their bushes or bearings need clock oil sparingly
These days you can buy volatile but non flammable spray cleaners which are quite adequate
The purist will say that true cleaning can only be done after dimantling
