my adsl is active ive brought a new filter but still it takes quite a while to connect but it does on windows 98 but not on xp ive got a Conexant AccessRunner PCI ADSL WAN Modem and all the settings are said to be correct.

Nick, have you tried turning off XP's built in Firewall. (Go to the properties of your internet connection icon.) Check the setting for Internet Connection Firewall on the Advanced Tab.

It could be that Windows XP's Firewall is conflicting with other security you have.
