help with malfunctioning upper tension Singer 201k?

My Singer sewing machine showed classic signs of having high upper tension when I first used it. It was set at tension of 3. After decreasing gradually to 0 I am still having problems with snapping thread and incorrect appearance of stitching (straight line of thread on top of fabric, with loops of bottom thread appearing on top at end of each stitch).

How do I take off and correctly reset the dial so I can decrease tension further? diagram would be appreciated as I find visual instructions easier.

Thanks Ken thats great, I have tightened the under tension screw and managed to reset the upper dial too and I'm now sewing on a tension of 4 or 5!!!

Hello Sally,
First of all check the tension on the bobbin and make sure it is in the correct way round, you should be able to pull the thread through with some resistence, if it is too loose toghten the screw on the bobbin case about a quarter of a turn at a time until you get it right, you can adjust the top tension if you have to by pushing the numbered dial in so it is away from the chrome thumb nut and then turn the nut either way so you get the pin into a different hole but try the bottom tension first, email me below if you have any problems.
