my father has a compaq laptop and the d drive is full. how can he make space in this drive without losing wanted files?

This answer may sound trite but it is correct. To make more space without deleted wanted files, delete some unwanted ones. In addition the Windows Disc Cleanup Utility has an option to compress old files. This will however slow down access to them.

He could of course fit a larger drive.
