Machine stays in position 4 for long periods and after a short spin selector switch just click all the way back to position 4.

After many advise from sources and word of mouth, I found the cause of my problems.
Steps I took are as follows:
1. Cleared the filter of trapped foreign items.
2. Freed the ball float in the main hose from a trapped safety pin.
3. Changed the heater element after it had meggered dead.
